Reception

The Reception at Falcons School is an exciting time. The pupils are at the start of their educational journey and we are determined to make their first experience of school a happy one.

Happy children learn and it is our principal expectation for the children in our care to feel happy and safe. We encourage our pupils to develop a curiosity that will make them want to keep on learning outside of the classroom walls. We help them to learn how to deal with their emotions so they are able to communicate how they feel in an effective and kind manner.

The Reception classroom is a constant hive of activity whether it be seeing the pupils involved in learning their sound of the week in phonics or outside in our Forest Garden for their Forest School lesson the pupils are happy and engaged. Following the Early Years and Foundation Stage curriculum we have a structured academic programme for literacy – including phonics, reading and writing – and mathematical development. We then enhance it by incorporating the more exploratory and creative areas of learning into our curriculum.

During the course of the academic year, we address all our curriculum areas through topic based activities, covering the following topics:

  • All About Me
  • Celebrations around the world
  • Under the Sea
  • Growth

The classroom is well resourced in order to meet individual learning styles and needs. Both pupils who need more support and those who need to be stretched are catered for.

Throughout the year parents are encouraged to be a part of their child’s learning journey – from weekly reading and Book look sessions and attending class assemblies.  The Reception class put on a fabulous nativity play and perform at the Harvest Festival and end of year Prize Giving. Pupils also enjoy a number of exciting trips throughout the academic year and take part in the whole school events including; Design Technology Days, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths) Week and Sports Day, to name but a few.
